International Mental Health Hospital in Kenya

GKSD and the Kenyan Ministry of Health signed an agreement for the development of the international mental health plan. The deal included developing and designing a new mental health hospital that will become a centre of national and regional excellence and staff development through training and exchange programmes as per the definition of the national mental health plan.

GKSD designed the first public mental health hospital in Kenya, namely «The Kenya International Mental Wellness Hospital».
The project actively involved GKSD Engineering for the engineering work and design of the hospital, and the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University that will provide training and exchange programmes for professionals and input from the scientific researchers in the field. The project included:

  • Design of the national mental health plan with the definition of the clinical and treatment activities and services offered by the facility, and the integration and collaboration paths with the national hospital network;
  • Planning of facilities within the area dedicated to medical training and health professionals (doctors, nurses, therapists and technicians) specialized in Mental Health;
  • Design concept of the urban, architectural, and engineering solutions of the new mental health hospital

The next phase of hospital development will implement a staff training programme on specialist mental health areas that will introduce new therapies and approaches to continuity of care and social reintegration. The Mental Health Task Force will develop the training program coordinated by Kenyatta University Hospital and Vita-Salute San Raffaele University.

On the 14th of June 2022, the cornerstone of the facility was placed at the ground-breaking ceremony, marking the beginning of construction site mobilisation for the Kenya International Mental Wellness Hospital near Nairobi.

Once completed, the Kenya International Mental Wellness Hospital will become a national educational and training hub for mental health.
